Based on the association’s vision and mission, the association focuses on the environment sector among the most important development sectors. From this standpoint, the name of the association came to express this orientation (Society for the Development of Environment and Society)At the beginning, we would like to point out that the issue of climate change is one of the priority issues for all institutions of the international community, and Egypt pays great attention in this context. The Environment and Community Development Association in Dandara adopts the idea of raising awareness and introducing climate changes in terms of their causes and how to confront them, and focuses on implementing projects that work to mitigate Reducing emissions and adapting to climate change.
Within the framework of achieving the goals of sustainable development and Egypt’s Vision 2030, the association has limited itself to taking into account, while designing its projects, one or more of the sustainable development goals and to take into account interconnectedness and integration in activities
Hence the project to protect agricultural soil from deterioration and irrigation water from wastage, taking into account the idea of reducing emissions and adapting to climate change. The project focused on preserving agricultural lands and protecting them from deterioration resulting from:
- Weak awareness of small farmers about the importance of organic fertilizers and weak production skills, which leads to burning agricultural and animal waste. The project also focused on protecting irrigation water from wasting, and here water wasting takes two types of waste.
- Excessive use of water as a result of irrigation operations, whether due to the unevenness of agricultural lands or due to the deterioration of the condition of the irrigation courses, their expansion, and the collapse of their sides, which leads to wasting a large amount of irrigation water and increasing the number of irrigation hours.
Irrigation water pollution With domestic and agricultural waste, which makes the water unsuitable and thus wastes natural resources, as the volume of solid waste generated from the village of Dendera daily amounts to 50 tons of household waste. This is in addition to thousands of tons of banana plantation waste for which the village of Dendera is famous, which is disposed of in waterways or by burning
- Based on these reasons, the project to protect agricultural soil from deterioration and irrigation water from wastage came to reduce the causes of the problem through the basic activities of the project:
- Lining an area of 300 linear meters of field irrigation paths and providing areas of agricultural land on the sides of the paths from 2 to 4 meters in width along the length of the paths, with a total land area of 2.5 acres of agricultural land, which achieves a set of results, the most important of which are (rationalizing water waste - saving an area of agricultural land - reducing fuel use - increasing productivity)
- Training 40 farmers on the production of organic fertilizers from agricultural wastes to produce organic fertilizers to improve the properties of agricultural soil and reduce emissions resulting from burning wastes or polluting canal water due to the decomposition of these wastes
- Increasing the awareness of 2,000 farmers about the importance of natural resources, the concept of sustainable development, and their relationship to climate change
Removing piles of garbage from canals and waterways and expanding the activity of collecting solid waste (household waste) to reduce pollution of waterways and reduce emissions resulting from burning waste or methane gas resulting from the decomposition of waste and its reactions
The project's direct target group: :
Increase the number of direct beneficiaries by 300 beneficiaries annually from the project permanently and continuously through land settlement in addition to the previous number
The project's indirect target group:
- 1,300 families benefiting from solid waste collection activity
