The subject of this cycle of the award:
The third goal of the sustainable development goals: good health and well-being
We have made great strides to reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, and combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Since 1990, preventable child deaths have declined by 50 percent globally. Maternal deaths also decreased by 45 percent worldwide. Between 2000 and 2013, more than 6.2 million people were saved from malaria, and new HIV/AIDS infections decreased by 30 percent.
Despite this tremendous progress, more than 6 million children still die before their fifth birthday each year. 16,000 children die every day from preventable diseases such as measles and tuberculosis. Hundreds of women die every day during pregnancy or from complications related to childbirth. In many rural areas, only 56 percent of births are attended by specialized professionals. Today, AIDS is the leading cause of death among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, which remains severely affected by the spread of the HIV epidemic. All of these deaths can be avoided through prevention and treatment, education, immunization campaigns, and sexual and reproductive health care..
In the Arab region, life expectancy at birth, an indicator of overall health conditions, rose from 58.5 years in 1980 to 70.6 years in 2015. In addition, child mortality in the Arab region decreased significantly from 131 per 1,000 live births in 1980 to 36.8 per 1,000 in 2015. 2015, which is partly due to the progress made by many Arab countries in increasing access to improved sanitation facilities from 66 percent in 1990 to 90 percent by 2015. The Sustainable Development Goals make a bold commitment to ending the epidemics of tuberculosis, malaria, AIDS and other communicable diseases by 2030. The pursuit of this goal includes achieving universal health coverage and providing access to safe and affordable medicines and vaccines for all. Supporting research and development in the field of vaccines is also an essential part of this endeavor.
