The subject of this cycle of the award:
The first goal of the sustainable development goals: eradicating poverty
Eradication of poverty in all its forms remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Although the number of people living in extreme poverty more than halved between 1990 and 2015, from 1.9 billion to 836 million, many still struggle to meet basic human needs. Globally, more than 800 million people still live on less than $1.25 a day, many of whom lack adequate food, clean drinking water and sanitation. Rapid economic growth in countries such as China and India has lifted millions out of poverty, But progress has been uneven. Progress has been limited in other regions, such as South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, which together account for 80 percent of those living in extreme poverty. Women also remain more likely to live in poverty than men due to unequal access to paid work, education and property rights. New threats from climate change, increased conflict and food insecurity also indicate that more work is needed to lift people out of poverty. In 2010, 4 percent of the Arab region’s population lived Below the international poverty line of US$1.25 per day, while 40 percent of them lived on less than US$2.75 per day. The Arab region is the only region in the world where extreme poverty has increased since 2010 (the number of people whose income is less than 1.25 US dollars per day).
The Sustainable Development Goals represent a bold commitment to ending the journey that the world began with The beginning of the third millennium to end poverty in all its forms and dimensions by 2030. This effort includes targeting the most vulnerable groups, increasing access to basic resources and services, and supporting communities affected by conflicts and climate-related disasters. style="color:#fefefe">.
